SMART-HUB
Smart-Hub is a compact network communication gateway that allows supported Microedge USB data loggers to be accessed remotely over Ethernet.
It combines three major functions in one device:
- USB Device Server
- RESTful Web API
- Modbus TCP Gateway
Up to 4 supported Microedge data loggers can be connected to Smart-Hub's dedicated USB ports. Smart-Hub then connects those loggers to the local Ethernet network, allowing Microedge software and third-party systems to access them remotely.
Supported logger families include:
- SITE-LOG
- iLOG
- PRECISE-LOG USB models
Smart-Hub is particularly useful when a USB data logger must remain installed away from the monitoring computer or when the same logger data must be made available to several different software or industrial systems.
USB Device Server
Smart-Hub acts as a USB Device Server, extending supported USB data loggers across the Ethernet network.
The basic architecture is:
Data Logger → USB → Smart-Hub → Ethernet Network → Microedge Software
Supported Microedge applications include:
- SiteView
- SiteView-Web
- SiteView SDK
- Pluto
This allows a remote USB data logger to be accessed without physically connecting it to the monitoring computer.
For example:
SITE-LOG → Smart-Hub → Ethernet → SiteView
or:
iLOG → Smart-Hub → Ethernet → SiteView-Web / Pluto
This is the most direct way to add Ethernet network access to a supported Microedge USB data logger.
RESTful Web API
Smart-Hub provides a RESTful Web API for integration with custom software and third-party systems.
The API allows supported applications to access functions such as:
- Viewing data logger activities
- Downloading recorded data
- Retrieving real-time readings
A typical architecture is:
Data Logger → Smart-Hub → Ethernet → REST API → Custom Software
This makes Smart-Hub suitable for developers building:
- Custom dashboards
- Web applications
- Database systems
- Data analytics applications
- Automated data collection software
- Middleware
- Other software integrations
The custom application communicates with Smart-Hub using standard web API requests rather than implementing Microedge's proprietary logger communication protocol.
Modbus TCP Gateway
Smart-Hub can also operate as a Modbus TCP Gateway.
Supported data loggers connected to Smart-Hub are exposed to Modbus TCP masters as network-accessible devices.
Real-time logger readings are made available through Modbus Input Registers, allowing compatible systems to poll and consume the measurements.
Typical Modbus TCP master devices include:
- PLCs
- HMIs
- SCADA systems
- Industrial PCs
- Building-management systems
- Custom Modbus software
A typical architecture is:
USB Data Logger → Smart-Hub → Ethernet → Modbus TCP Master
This allows existing USB data loggers to become part of an industrial Modbus TCP system without requiring built-in Ethernet or WiFi.
Multiple Communication Methods from One Gateway
One of the main advantages of Smart-Hub is that the same connected data logger can be accessed in several different ways.
For example, a logger connected to Smart-Hub may be accessed through:
- SiteView for configuration and data download
- SiteView-Web / Pluto for browser-based monitoring
- SiteView SDK for custom Windows applications
- RESTful Web API for custom software
- Modbus TCP for PLC, HMI, or SCADA integration
This reduces the need for separate communication hardware for each application.
Remote Access over Ethernet
Smart-Hub connects to the local network through Ethernet.
After connection, its IP address can be assigned automatically through DHCP.
The typical network path is:
Data Logger → USB → Smart-Hub → Ethernet → Local Network
From there, compatible software or systems can access the logger remotely.
This is useful for:
- Laboratories
- Manufacturing areas
- Equipment rooms
- Environmental monitoring sites
- Test chambers
- Remote cabinets
- Distributed data logging installations
Admin Web Portal
Smart-Hub includes a browser-based Admin Web Portal for device configuration and management.
The portal can be used to review and change Smart-Hub settings from a web browser.
Typical administration tasks may include:
- Network configuration
- Connected logger status
- Access settings
- Device configuration
Password-Protected Access
Smart-Hub provides password protection so access can be limited to authorized clients.
For installations involving remote access, REST API, or Modbus TCP, normal network-security practices should also be used, such as:
- Firewalls
- Network segmentation
- Strong passwords
- VPN access for remote users
- Restricting access to trusted devices
Smart-Hub should generally be placed behind appropriate network security rather than exposed directly to the public Internet.
Power for Connected Data Loggers
Smart-Hub provides 5 VDC power to connected data loggers through its USB ports.
This allows the connected data loggers to operate from Smart-Hub power rather than consuming their internal batteries during network-connected operation.
This is particularly useful for long-term remote installations where continuous communication is required.
Up to Four Data Loggers
Smart-Hub provides four dedicated USB ports for supported Microedge data loggers.
Up to four compatible SITE-LOG, iLOG, or PRECISE-LOG USB data loggers can be connected at the same time.
Each logger can then be accessed through the supported Smart-Hub communication functions.
